Vernacular jazz (solo swing, jazz roots) refers to dance styles that originated and developed alongside jazz music, mainly within African-American communities in the USA during the early 20th century. These dances were often improvised and informal, practiced in social contexts such as parties, clubs and neighborhoods.

The term vernacular means “of the people”, reflecting the popular and communal nature of these dances, as opposed to more codified or institutional forms of dance.
These dances are characterized by their expressiveness, syncopated rhythm and direct connection to jazz music. They capture the spirit of jazz through dynamic, joyful and often highly personal movements, allowing dancers to express themselves freely while remaining rooted in a collective tradition.

Artists such as Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey or Nina Simone put their music at the service of social criticism. Half a century later, the anti-fascist, anti-racist and anti-capitalist struggle is still the order of the day.
